Helpful List for A First Time Home Buyer
Posted on Oct 20, 2016
Are you a first time home buyer? If you’re ready to take the plunge, there are a lot of things for you to know before buying. Buying a home is a big deal, and a big commitment. The entire process can be stressful and intimidating if you don’t have a knowledgeable agent working with you. There are a lot of things you should be asking and considering beforehand so the process can go smoothly for you. Below, I’m sharing a to-do list filled with key steps, questions, tips, and points for you to think about during your first home-purchasing process. With these points in mind, you’ll feel more comfortable with every step of the way.

- Save money for down payments, closing costs, and escrow for insurance and taxes.
- Improve your credit score. You can do this by paying bills on time, having no major purchase, and not canceling a credit card.
- Calculate what you can afford. A great resource for that can be found here.
- Get preapproval for a mortgage. Shop around for the best deal and choose primary and back up lenders. If you’re looking for mortgage advice, click here. You can get a recommendation from your agent to get pre-qualified for a certain dollar amount. After you are pre-qualified, do not buy anything on credit.
- Decide what you actually want in a home, and create a checklist.
- Sit down with your agent and discuss your wants, wishes, and needs.
- Once your agent sends you homes, drive by your favorites (take photos and make notes) and narrow down list to weed our neighborhoods you don’t like. Visit neighborhoods both during the day and at night to get a feel for the area (noise and traffic). Think about the commute and resale value.
- When you find a home you like, make an offer.
- Schedule the home inspection.
- Wait to see what the appraisal price comes in at.
- Do a final walk-through to make sure the home is left the way you have requested and all agreed upon repairs have been made.
- Close on the deal!
